Decorative dado rails and friezes in solid wood

Whether fitted at chair height to decorate a wall or used to hang pictures, a dado rail or picture rail sets the rhythm of a room. Our workshop carves decorative dado rails (chair rails, in American English) and friezes in solid French wood, oak or poplar, for Haussmann-era interiors and contemporary projects alike. Each length of moulding is shaped in our workshop, then sanded and finished by hand, whether ready to fit or made to measure.

The wooden dado rail: the ornament that gives walls their structure

Inherited from classical houses, this moulded rail runs horizontally along the walls, about a metre above the floor or higher up, depending on the tradition followed. At the lower height, it is the dado rail (a chair rail, in American English): it separates the dado panelling from the upper part of the wall and protects the walls from being scuffed by chair backs. In drawing rooms, it also served as a picture rail for hanging paintings.

Today, a wooden dado rail sets the character of a room in just a few linear metres: it emphasises the ceiling height, frames wallpaper and gives wooden dado panelling or wall panelling a visual anchor.

Why choose a solid wood dado rail?

Like an antique boiserie (carved wood panelling), a solid wood dado rail can be sanded, repaired, stained, waxed or painted, and its carved edges stay crisp over the years. An oak dado rail makes the most of finishes that leave the wood visible; poplar lends itself to profiles intended for painting, and walnut, reputed to be the finest of our cabinet-making woods, to decors that call for a darker wood.

Each profile is carved, then inspected, in our workshop in Cornebarrieu, near Toulouse.

Carved wall friezes: ornament that runs along the walls

The wooden wall frieze is the ornate sister of the dado rail: where the dado rail gives structure, the frieze tells a story. Foliate scrolls, egg-and-dart, gadroons, Greek key patterns or contemporary designs dress a band of wall, underline a cornice, or frame a panel or a door.

From catalogue to bespoke

Our collection of decorative wood mouldings covers the most common needs: classic profiles, carved friezes, dado rails you can personalise, lengths sold by the linear metre and workshop finishes. For an antique profile to reproduce, a long run or a complete wall boiserie project, contact us: the workshop considers every request.

Frequently asked questions

Cimaise or cymaise: which spelling?

Both spellings are used in French. Cymaise is the older form, taken from the wavy profile of the moulding; modern usage has settled on cimaise. It is the same ornament, known in Britain as a dado rail and in the United States as a chair rail.

At what height should a dado rail be fitted?

Tradition places it at dado height, most often between 80 cm and 1 m from the floor, along the top of the lower wall panelling. Fitted high on the wall, near the ceiling, it works as a picture rail instead.

Can you hang pictures from a wooden rail?

Yes, provided the rail is screwed into the wall rather than simply glued, and ideally fitted high, as a picture rail. Mention this use when you order, so that the right profile and fixing can be chosen.

Do you make dado rails in other woods?

Yes, on request: oak, poplar, walnut and other French woods, depending on the project, the finish and the fitting constraints.
