Haussmann drawing room, in detail

A Haussmann drawing room owes its grandeur to the ceiling height. The dado rail sits at about one third of the wall, around one metre, and divides it into two registers: a dado of rhythmic panels and, above, tall panels rising towards the ceiling. The upper panels follow the axes of the lower ones, which gives the wall its calm.

Above the fireplace, the overmantel takes the place of a panel and often frames a mirror. On the ceiling, a rose around the light fitting answers the chevron parquet. Painted tone on tone, the panelling lets the light play across its mouldings.

Why the dado rail sits at this height

  • Proportion used: 33% of 320 cm gives 106 cm (an exact third would be 107 cm).
  • Capped at 105 cm: under a tall ceiling, the rail stays at dado height and the upper panels take up the extra height.
