The piece in detail

Coats of Arms & Portraits

A piece shaped with care,
from log to finish.

True heirloom pieces, our coats of arms and portraits combine rigorous preparatory drawing, fine carving and workshop finishing. Beyond our range of standard sizes, we assess and quote for all your heraldic projects and personalised portraits.

This design is inspired by the famous rose window on the south façade of Saint-Pierre Cathedral in Beauvais, one of the most ambitious buildings of French Gothic architecture. In medieval architecture, the rose window is not merely a decorative feature. It symbolises divine order, the harmony of the world and the perfection of Creation. Its circular form, with neither beginning nor end, evokes the eternity of God and the unity of the cosmos. The number of lobes and their arrangement often follow a precise symbolism, echoing the Christian virtues, the apostles or the cycles of time. In cathedrals, these rose windows are filled with coloured stained glass that turns light into a spiritual book.

  1. I

    The heraldic study

Coat of arms, motto and external ornaments are redrawn by the rules of heraldry before being transferred onto the wood.

  2. II

    Relief carving

Carved from the solid, the relief is then reworked by hand: its details are refined with a chisel.

  3. III

    The ceremonial finish

A patina, heraldic tinctures in polychromy or gold leaf bring out the character of the piece.
