The piece in detail

Coats of Arms & Portraits

A piece shaped with care,
from log to finish.

Designed as true heirloom pieces, our coats of arms and portraits combine the precision of preparatory drawing, the finesse of sculpting, and meticulous workshop finishes. Beyond our range of standard sizes, we review and quote all your custom heraldic projects and personalized portraits upon request.

Family crest, medallion or carved portrait: heirloom pieces, made to pass down the generations. The preparatory drawing is submitted before any carving for heraldic commissions.

  1. I

    The heraldic study

Coat of arms, motto and external ornaments are redrawn by the rules of heraldry before being transferred onto the wood.

  2. II

    Relief carving

Lime and oak are favoured for their ability to hold the finest detail — charges of the field, mantling, helm.

  3. III

    The ceremonial finish

Patina, polychromy of heraldic enamels or gold leaf underline the rank of the piece.

Available wood species

3 species

Oak

+15%

Bold, golden figure

The quintessential noble French wood. Hard, durable, with its recognisable figure, it lends prestige and patina to reception-room panelling.

Walnut

+25%

Deep, moiré brown

The most prestigious of our woods: deep brown, shimmering figure, silky patina. Reserved for exceptional pieces and varnished or waxed finishes.

Lime (linden)

+8%

Tight, cream grain

The carvers' wood: soft, knot-free, it holds the finest detail. Favoured for medallions and chisel-worked portraits.

Atelier finishes

RawIncluded
Bare wood, simply sanded. For those who wish to apply their own finish or let the material breathe as it is.
Varnish+8%
A clear protective film that reveals the grain and guards against everyday marks. Available matt, satin or gloss.
Wood stain+10%
A translucent tint that colours the wood without masking its grain. Ideal to warm a pale species or even out a tone.
Wax+12%
A traditional beeswax finish, silky to the touch with a living patina that improves with time and care.
Paint+15%
Opaque lacquer applied in several coats, colour of your choice (swatch on request). A crisp, contemporary look or an aged, antiqued finish.
Gold leaf+45%
Gold or copper leaf laid on bole, burnished with an agate stone. The ceremonial finish, executed by hand, piece by piece.

Care

Wall pieces: regular dusting with a soft brush preserves the relief. Gilded parts are never touched with bare hands.

Keep away from direct humidity. A micro-crystalline wax can be applied by the atelier over patinas.
